Peter Island Resort Becomes the First
in the Virgin Islands to Install Wind Turbines

Taking a major step toward making the resort one of the greenest in the Caribbean, and achieving the added bonus of some very practical benefits, Peter Island Resort in the British Virgin Islands has become the first in the territory to install wind turbines.

"We've studied the idea for years as a method to better manage our energy needs while maintaining the beautiful, undisturbed landscapes that Peter Island is known for," said CEO David Van Andel. "These new state-of-the-art turbines are not only environmentally friendly but also energy efficient, which makes them an ideal option for this geographic location."

Constantly monitored by a computer program, these turbines will help the resort decrease its fuel consumption by 25% and its overall carbon footprint by 75%. The turbines can be secured during high-force winds, which will expedite resort response following a storm. The twin blades also have the benefit of being a reduced hazard to local wildlife.

Additionally, there will be more immediate improvements in guest services. These new wind turbines will allow Peter Island Resort to deliver a more consistent electrical supply, negating the disruptions in power that are common throughout the Caribbean.

The effect of the turbines on the resort's visual aesthetics was also considered before installation. The operations team and project architects painstakingly selected a location that would maximize wind absorption while not impairing the panoramic views Peter Island is known for.

"Many people talk about what should be done, but we decided to do it," said Van Andel. "We are proud to lead by example in terms of the benefits derived for the environment and the resort cost structure. This is something we hope others will follow in as well as the region could greatly benefit from this technology."
